Petermen

I recently dined at Petermen and was quite disappointed. The overall experience did not live up to the high expectations, especially considering the steep price tag.

First off, the food was excessively salty across the board. We ordered the fermented rice cake and bone marrow crumpet—both dishes were incredibly oily, which made them difficult to enjoy. The prawn tart with pig guanciale had an odd combination of flavors and tasted disturbingly similar to canned corn soup.

For starters, we had the spanner crab and pork salad—yet again, overly salty. The scallop and chive dumpling was extremely average, comparable to something you’d find at a supermarket. The broth is again - salty.

The only dish that tasted decent was the cod, which we had as our main. It was well-prepared, but one good dish wasn’t enough to redeem the experience.

On top of everything, we paid $350 for two people and still left feeling hungry. For that price, the portions were small, and the quality was definitely not worth the cost. In short, this restaurant is overrated, overpriced, and disappointing. Wouldn’t recommend.

My rating is 4.5*
When we got the email announcing the new menu at Petermen we knew we have to try it out as last visit a few months ago was excellent.
This time we booked a table for 6 with the aim of sampling as many items as we can.
We had some oysters as starters which were very fresh and tasty. We then ordered the 3 different combos of surf and turf (for 2) on the menu to share between the six of us. The coral trout and steak were definitely the standouts but the rests were all very good. The only blemish for me was the swordfish which was a little bland for the pork combo but the pork was . . . crackling!
We then ordered all the desserts plus the "secret" custard tart. Don't judge us. Diet starts tomorrow! I promise.
They were all very good. The famous tart certainly deserved its reputation. The tiramisu was very moist and flavoursome but the presentation was a bit meh.
Overall, it was an excellent meal but there were minor glitches. The service started well. However, once the restaurant filled up, the wait staff felt stretched. The room also became quite noisy. The food delivery was still spot on but we had to ask 3 times before we got our bill. Maybe they just didn't want us to go. 😉
The saying used to be Petermen knows their fish. Now I can say Petermen knows their surf and turf.

Beautifully presented dishes that showcase each of its heroes perfectly. I enjoyed Petermen more than Saint Peter! Such a beautiful space as well, definitely an impressive spot for a special event or a treat yourself moment. My favourite was the crab tart!

Four of us had a fantastic dinner at Petermen. The service was excellent all through the meal and the food was delicious. The bull kelp Martini was a great way to start the meal, the snacks made us keen for more and the entree and mains just kept delivering. The restaurant itself is really comfortable too.

Was in town last month visiting from San Francisco. Originally I wanted to try Saint Peter but could not get a table for the date/time I wanted so chose Petermen........which turned into a blessing in disguise! We appreciated the service from the staff since my husband wears 2 hearing aids and even though we never requested this, the staff made sure not to seat any party next to us. Left quite an impression on us! They were able to do this since it was a weekday. Service continued to be great throughout the dinner service. As for the meal, this was a seafood-centric meal from starters to finish which you don't find in most restaurants. We did the 3-course menu + snacks.
* short spine sea urchin crumpet (supplement)
* hand picked mud crab
* fragrant mud crab broth
* yellowfin tuna sausage roll
* island scallop and bone dumpling with black truffle
* raw pink snapper with buckwheat and native apples
* coral trout with periwinkles
Sausage roll fell a bit flat for me but everything else was excellent. I was so full by the time my main came, I had to ask my husband to finish it. Added bonus for me was finding Jim Barry Assyrtiko.
Even though the restaurant is out in the burbs, put this place on your list if you like a reasonably priced seafood place!
