Saul's Sandwiches in Hawthorn brings a slice of New York deli culture to Melbourne, and it does so with flair. They quickly become a local favourite, known for its generously filled sandwiches that pack a punch of flavor. The menu features standout items like the smoked pastrami sandwich - a must try for any meat lover.
The interior at Saul's is reminiscent of a classic New York diner, with its retro red and white tiling and cursive branding creating a warm and inviting space. Another delicious sandwich spot in Melbourne!

The eggplant cutlet was really nice, a good combination of ingredients and just the right amount of filling.

The chicken sandwich was okay. Wish it had a bit more flavour. We added the hot peppers which gave a nice kick but I feel like without it there wouldn’t have been as much taste as I would’ve liked.

Overall a good spot! Keen to head back and try some of the breakfast sandwiches.

Solid experience. Amazing gluten free Turkish bun.

Filling 3-4 stars depending on what you get.

Chicken Parma definitely recommended, especially by my daughter.

Today’s breaded treats were the Tuna Melt and the Smoked Pastrami. For me, the Pastrami was the better but once again, the Saul’s offerings were delicious. Fresh, very tasty and great service.

Tried the famous smoked pastrami sandwich, the filling is quite loaded. Love the pastrami, it has a great smoky flavour. Taste-wise: pretty good but nothing wow. Service is very friendly. Worth to try

My review is in comparison with other popular sandwich places like Hector’s deli, Hugo’s deli, Nico’s deli, Warkop which are excellent places for sandwiches with best fried chickens.

This sandwich place isn’t my cup of tea though, I tried their special fried chicken Caesar sandwich and was quite disappointed by how greasy the whole sandwich was, the anchovies were way too big (and smells unpleasantly ‘fishy’) and salty for the already-salty combination. The fried chicken portion was a bit small for the size of their bread. That said, I probably ordered the wrong thing as it seems like their other items are more popular. I may consider trying it again if I’m nearby but wouldn’t go out of my way for it unfortunately. The Caesar sandwich itself is probably 1 star but since I didn’t try their main sandwiches, I don’t want to be too harsh hence a 3/5 review for now until I give this another shot..

REVIEW:
Located inside an area with lots of shops, Saul's sandwiches is also an iconic Melbournian sandwich joint. I love that they cut their sandwiches in two, which makes it perfect for sharing!

Smoked Pastrami was the best flavour. It's wonderfully smoky and chewy while encased in a warm toasted bread... it's like a warm hug. The kale and cabbage slaw is perfect in making you feel like you're having a slightly healthy sandwich as well.

I would pass on the Tuna Melt. Although they mixed the diced calabrain chilli into the tuna mix (which suggests it's made fresh!), it just felt like something I used to eat in the mornings from the can. I guess I'm also not a big appreciator of Tuna.

There's no seating in store, but if you walk down the block past Kori Icecream, you can find some public seats available.

Recommended by a few friends for their sandwiches.

Finally got a chance to grab a tuna melt and it was pretty good. The taste was balanced with a good amount of tuna chunks, and the portion was more than enough as a lunch.

The custard puff is quite ordinary - not in a bad way. Thin pastry with heaps of filling. The most impressive bit is the sugar coating on top, guess it was vanilla sugar? Not too sweet, not too crunchy. Basically a standard vanilla custard puff.

Will return for other items on the menu.
